Well Operations Reports: Morning vs. Afternoon

RigReports plays a crucial role in tracking and documenting daily well operations. Its main function is to provide a robust and reliable report delivery system that simplifies the process for the entire team. In this blog post we’ll delve into the two main mechanisms of delivering these reports: the Morning Report and the Afternoon Report (also known as a Partial Report). These seemingly similar documents serve distinct purposes, and understanding their differences is essential for efficient communication and decision-making.

In the following sections, we’ll break down the morning and afternoon reports, highlighting their use cases and benefits, and when to choose one or both.

When should you use Morning Reports?

Sometimes called standard reports, almost every job will have at least one morning report distributed between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM. This report, sent out when the management team is arriving in the office, allows them to assess the operations from the previous day.

Morning reports represent the previous 24-hours of work. Depending on the job type (drilling, workover, frac, refrac, completions, facility), they present details about the operations that occurred and the associated costs. Morning reports provide complete coverage of the operations, equipment, and materials from the previous day, as well as their status at report time.

What are the benefits of a standard Morning Report?

  • Complete picture: The morning report gives your team a complete picture of the previous 24 hours of operations and costs. The details of the operations that were performed the previous day are presented in totality.
  • Alignment and Coordination: When teams receive morning reports simultaneously, it fosters alignment and coordination. Everyone starts the day with a unified understanding of job status, priorities, and objectives.

When should you use Afternoon Reports?

Afternoon reports, sometimes called partial reports, are typically used on jobs where the rig is operating 24 hours a day. If the rig is only working daylight hours, a single morning report is usually sufficient. For this reason, afternoon reports are very common for offshore operations where 24 hour operations are standard due to the high costs of equipment and transportation.

Afternoon reports do not always contain the same level of detail as morning reports. If an afternoon report is distributed at 6:00 PM, the report might only include the hourly operations log from 06:00 AM to 06:00 PM. The company representative on location might not have had time to accumulate and confirm all costs, inventory, etc.

Even though afternoon reports do not provide complete coverage, they help decision makers in the office determine what operation changes might be necessary overnight.

What are the benefits of a partial Afternoon Report?

  • Course Correction: With afternoon reports, teams can assess daily performance and make course corrections as needed. They can make changes in strategy to ensure the team at the rig is progressing in the right direction while everyone else is sleeping.
  • Decision Validation: Decision-makers can validate morning decisions based on afternoon data. This validation ensures that strategies are effective, resources are optimally utilized, and objectives are being met in a timely manner.

Setting up Morning and Afternoon Reports

One of the primary features of RigReports is automating the distribution of your daily operations reports. Whether you want to schedule just one morning report or know your team would benefit from an afternoon update, RigReports makes it easy to set up distribution lists to cover all your needs.

The two types of Distribution Lists in RigReports

  1. Standard report distributions – Used to send out morning reports, standard report distributions occur after the full report for the previous 24-hour day of work has been submitted and approved (if necessary). These distributions are usually scheduled between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
  1. Partial report distributions – Partial report distributions can be scheduled at any time but are usually scheduled for the afternoon and are used to send out afternoon reports. Partial report distributions occur at the scheduled time even if a report is still in draft mode. The data available in the report at the time of distribution is used.
Setting up a new distribution list in RigReports is a simple process that starts with choosing a Standard Report or Partial Report

Can a Job have both Standard and Partial Report Distributions?

Absolutely, and it probably should. If you have a Partial Report Distribution list set up for a job, you are almost always going to have a Standard Report Distribution set up for that job too. In RigReports, there is no limit to the number of distribution lists you can set up. You can set up multiple distribution lists of each type. This allows you to send the most applicable report format to various personnel at the right times.

Typical distribution list group for a job in RigReports

The screenshot above shows a typical distribution list plan for a job. In this sample job:

  • Standard morning reports are going out to 3 different contact groups between 7:00 AM and 8:15 AM.
  • Each group receives a report with varying levels of details based on their desires and what they are authorized to see.
  • A partial afternoon report is automatically sent at 5:00 PM to a smaller team to give them the opportunity to review the day’s operations and make course corrections for overnight.

There is no limit to the number of distribution list setups that you can have for a job. You could schedule for your team to receive automated progress updates every 6 hours by setting up partial distributions for 12:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 12:00 AM.

With RigReports, you can make sure that your team receives the right information any time of the day. The reports that you want are sent when you need them.
